(RTTNews) - Hansa Biopharma AB (HNSA) has marked a milestone with the first commercial kidney transplant patient in Australia treated using its antibody-cleaving therapy, Idefirix.
The treatment is designed to help highly sensitized patients—those with donor-specific antibodies that make finding a compatible organ difficult—gain access to transplantation.
The company confirmed that the patient underwent a living donor kidney transplant following Idefirix administration.
CEO Renée Aguiar-Lucander highlighted the significance of this achievement and added "We look forward to continued collaboration with the Australian transplant community to build experience with Idefirix across both living and deceased donor transplantations."
Idefirix, also known as Imlifidase, is an IgG-cleaving enzyme therapy derived from Streptococcus pyogenes. It works by breaking down IgG antibodies within hours, neutralizing their activity and enabling transplantation for patients who would otherwise be incompatible.
The drug is conditionally approved in the European Union, UK and several other countries, including Australia, Israel and Switzerland. It is indicated for adult kidney transplant candidates who test positive against living or deceased donors. Patient outcomes in Australia will be tracked through a registry, with real-world data expected to support future scientific publications.
In March 2026, Hansa Biopharma announced that the U.S. FDA has set a PDUFA action date of December 19, 2026, for its Biologics License Application of Imlifidase. This decision will determine potential U.S. approval and represents a key regulatory milestone for the company.
Globally, highly sensitized patients represent about 10-15% of transplant waiting lists. Their antibody profiles often prevent successful matches, leading to prolonged waiting periods and increased mortality risk. By enabling desensitization, Idefirix offers a potential pathway to transplantation for this underserved group.
The first commercial use in Australia underscores Hansa Biopharma's strategy to expand Idefirix's footprint and strengthen its role in addressing unmet needs in kidney transplant.
HNSA has traded between SEK 23.52 and SEK 43.80 over the past year. The stock is currently trading at SEK 43.18, up 3.05%.
Desensitization: Medical process that reduces or eliminates antibodies, allowing transplant candidates to receive organs from otherwise incompatible donors.
IgG antibodies: Immune proteins that can trigger rejection in transplant patients if donor-specific antibodies are present.
