Hanwha Aerospace Signs Execution Contract with Spain for K9 Howitzer — First Export to Western Europe

South Korea's Hanwha Aerospace has signed an execution contract with Spanish defense contractor Indra Sistemas S.A. for the export of K9 self-propelled howitzers. This marks the first time the K9 howitzer has entered the Western European market.

Hanwha Aerospace disclosed on the 31st that it had entered into an "execution contract for the export of K9 self-propelled howitzers and related systems to Spain" with Indra Sistemas. Both the contract signing date and the contract period start date were the 28th, with Spain as the sales and supply region.

Specific export quantities, contract value, and the contract period end date were not disclosed. The company withheld disclosure of these items citing business confidentiality, with the withholding deadline set for November 28. Once the confidentiality reasons are resolved, the company plans to re-disclose the relevant details.

Payment terms were partially disclosed. The structure calls for an initial advance payment of 20% of the contract value upon signing, followed by a second advance payment of 5% by December 31. The contract value and period may be subject to change during the course of the project.

First Entry into Western Europe — Operating Countries Expand to 11

This contract significantly broadens the export footprint of the K9 self-propelled howitzer. Previously exported to Norway, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Türkiye, India, Egypt, and Australia, the K9 now counts 11 operating countries with the addition of Spain. Notably, Spain is the first Western European country to adopt the K9.

Hanwha Aerospace had previously disclosed on July 24 that it had signed a framework agreement for product supply exceeding 2.5% of its revenue. Given last year's consolidated revenue of 26.7 trillion won (approximately $19.4 billion), the contract size would be at least 667.6 billion won (approximately $485.9 million) by simple calculation. However, since the exact contract values of both the July framework agreement and this execution contract remain undisclosed, that figure cannot be treated as a confirmed amount.

At the time, the company stated that "detailed contract-related matters are entirely non-disclosable at the counterparty's confidentiality request." This latest disclosure definitively confirms that the July agreement was for the Spanish K9 howitzer export contract.

Local Production and Job Creation

The Spanish K9 export gained momentum in March when Hanwha Aerospace signed a binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Indra Sistemas. Under the arrangement, Hanwha Aerospace will provide the K9 platform and core technology, while Indra Sistemas will manufacture the hull and control and communication systems at its Gijón plant in northern Spain for delivery to the Spanish Army.

Indra Sistemas has announced plans to invest 130 million euros (approximately 207.3 billion won) in building local production facilities and create 500 direct jobs and 1,000 indirect jobs. This is significant as a package-type contract that goes beyond simple arms exports to include local industrial ecosystem development and job creation.

The Spanish government approved the introduction of a tracked self-propelled howitzer system in November last year. The comprehensive acquisition program, which includes the howitzers as well as ammunition resupply vehicles, command post vehicles, and logistics support systems to be secured by 2034, is reported to be worth approximately 4.5 billion euros. Since this execution contract covers the first phase of the program — supply of the howitzer platforms themselves — the possibility of follow-on contracts remains open.

This export is expected to serve as a major milestone in the global expansion of South Korea's defense industry, as Korean weapons systems open the door to the Western European defense market beyond Northern Europe, Eastern Europe, and Asia-Oceania.
