FBI Links North Korea to $6 Billion Binance Cryptocurrency TheftUS investigators attribute record Binance cryptocurrency theft to North Korean hackers.
The North Korea Binance hack investigation has taken a significant turn after the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) attributed the theft of more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance to North Korean state-sponsored hackers.
The FBI said on October 31 that the cyberattack was carried out by a North Korean hacking operation known as TraderTraitor. The announcement followed the October 29 breach of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, in which approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets was stolen.
According to Reuters, US investigators observed the attackers converting stolen cryptocurrency into Ethereum as part of an effort to move and potentially launder the funds. The FBI warned that additional attempts to conceal the stolen assets were expected.
The official attribution represents a significant development in the investigation. Before the FBI’s announcement, blockchain intelligence companies, including TRM Labs and Chainalysis, had identified similarities between the Binance attack and previous cryptocurrency thefts attributed to North Korean hackers.
The attack has raised concerns about the security of cryptocurrency exchanges and the ability of sophisticated cybercriminal groups to exploit financial technology infrastructure.
According to an earlier Reuters investigation into the Binance breach, most of the stolen cryptocurrency was transferred within approximately 20 minutes. Blockchain analysts reported that attackers had compromised systems responsible for authorizing cryptocurrency transactions.
Binance initially suspected that a compromised employee laptop was involved, but subsequent investigations identified additional points of unauthorized access. The exchange has not publicly established the complete sequence of the attack.
The FBI’s attribution focuses attention on TraderTraitor, a hacking operation previously associated with major cryptocurrency thefts. In February 2025, the agency attributed the $1.5 billion Bybit cryptocurrency theft to North Korea.
US authorities have repeatedly warned that North Korean cyber operations target financial institutions and digital-asset companies to generate revenue despite international sanctions.
Cybersecurity researchers have also linked North Korean cryptocurrency thefts to efforts to finance the country’s military and weapons programs. However, the specific destination and ultimate use of funds stolen from Binance have not been independently established.
Meanwhile, Binance has moved to reassure customers that losses from the attack will be covered.
In a separate Reuters report published October 31, the exchange said it had replenished approximately 90 percent of the stolen assets using company resources, including its emergency protection funds and corporate treasury.
Binance co-CEO Richard Teng said the company was committed to replacing the remaining assets and that customers would not bear the financial impact of the incident.
The exchange said it had allocated approximately $6.34 billion to cover the losses. However, replacing customer assets with company funds does not mean the stolen cryptocurrency has been recovered from the hackers.
The attack has also prompted other cryptocurrency exchanges to review their security arrangements. Companies across the industry are examining vulnerabilities involving private keys, transaction authorization systems and employee access to sensitive financial infrastructure.
The FBI’s announcement adds a national security dimension to the investigation, connecting one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in history to a hacking operation that US authorities attribute to North Korea.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities and cryptocurrency companies attempt to trace the stolen assets and prevent further laundering.

Elon Musk Briefly Regains Trillionaire Status as Tesla and SpaceX Shares SurgeMusk’s fortune briefly tops $1 trillion after Tesla and SpaceX rally.
Elon Musk briefly regained trillionaire status on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, after a sharp rise in the value of his holdings in SpaceX and Tesla pushed his estimated personal fortune above $1 trillion, according to Forbes.
The billionaire entrepreneur’s wealth increased by approximately $94 billion during the opening hours of US stock trading, reaching an estimated $1.019 trillion before retreating later in the day.
According to Forbes’ updated report, Musk ended Wednesday with an estimated net worth of $989 billion, representing a daily increase of approximately $64 billion.
The figures highlight how rapidly the fortunes of the world’s wealthiest individuals can change when substantial portions of their wealth are tied to publicly traded companies.
SpaceX and Tesla Shares Drive Wealth Increase
The sharp rise in Musk’s estimated fortune followed strong investor interest in SpaceX and Tesla, two companies central to his business empire.
SpaceX shares climbed more than 10% during Wednesday’s early trading after the aerospace company released third-quarter financial results that exceeded market expectations.
Tesla shares also advanced more than 3% as investors anticipated the electric vehicle manufacturer’s quarterly earnings announcement.
By the market close, SpaceX had gained nearly 8%, while Tesla finished approximately 3.5% higher.
The simultaneous increases significantly raised the market value of Musk’s ownership stakes.
Forbes estimates that Musk holds approximately 38% of SpaceX and 11% of Tesla, making movements in their share prices particularly important in determining his overall wealth.
SpaceX Reports Strong Revenue Growth
SpaceX’s latest financial results provided one of the main catalysts for the market rally.
The company reported a 161% year-on-year increase in third-quarter revenue, reflecting rapid expansion in its satellite communications and artificial intelligence businesses.
Its artificial intelligence operations recorded particularly strong growth, with revenue rising by approximately 830% compared with the corresponding period a year earlier.
SpaceX also reported substantial growth in Starlink subscriptions, with the number of subscribers increasing from 1.6 million to 13.6 million.
The results demonstrate the company’s growing role beyond traditional rocket launches, particularly in satellite connectivity and AI-related infrastructure.
Possible Tesla–SpaceX Merger Attracts Attention
Investor enthusiasm was also supported by Musk’s confirmation that Tesla and SpaceX are exploring a potential merger.
During SpaceX’s earnings call, Musk disclosed that the boards of both companies had established special committees to evaluate a possible combination.
Such a transaction could bring together businesses operating in electric vehicles, robotics, satellite communications, aerospace engineering and artificial intelligence.
However, Musk cautioned that an agreement was not guaranteed.
A merger would require complex negotiations and could face significant regulatory and corporate governance scrutiny because of the companies’ size, ownership structures and operations across multiple industries.
Reuters reported on October 22 that Musk’s public support for the proposed combination had raised concerns among people involved in the early-stage negotiations.
No final merger agreement has been announced.
Musk’s Fortune Remains Highly Volatile
Musk first crossed the trillion-dollar wealth threshold in June 2026, following SpaceX’s public stock market debut, according to Forbes.
Since then, fluctuations in the share prices of his major companies have repeatedly pushed his estimated fortune above and below the milestone.
Although Wednesday’s rally temporarily restored his trillionaire status, the subsequent decline illustrates the difference between estimated market wealth and cash holdings.
Much of Musk’s fortune consists of ownership stakes whose values change throughout the trading day.
The billionaire’s growing influence also extends beyond financial markets into technology, media and politics.
His public profile and business interests have attracted significant scrutiny, including in the Elon Musk documentary that premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2026.
Forbes continues to rank Musk as the world’s wealthiest individual, despite the fluctuations in his estimated fortune.
His brief return to trillionaire status reflects the extraordinary valuations investors are placing on businesses connected to artificial intelligence, satellite communications and emerging technologies.

Google Cloud Outage Disrupts UK Banks and Government WebsitesGoogle restores cloud services after widespread disruption to UK banking and public websites.
A major Google Cloud outage disrupted banking applications, payment services and public-sector websites across the United Kingdom on Tuesday, exposing the risks of relying on a small number of technology companies to operate critical digital infrastructure.
The disruption affected Google’s London-based cloud region, causing customers to experience service interruptions, network failures and errors across multiple cloud products.
Financial institutions, including Revolut, Lloyds Bank and HSBC, reported difficulties affecting customers. Problems were also reported with public services, delivery companies and other online platforms.
According to Google Cloud’s official incident report, the disruption began at 07:08 British Summer Time and lasted approximately seven hours and 52 minutes.
Google identified a power-related incident in one of its London availability zones as the cause of the disruption.
The company subsequently closed the incident and confirmed that the affected cloud services had largely recovered.
Banking Customers Face Payment and Access Problems
The outage caused interruptions to online banking and other financial services used by customers across Britain.
Digital bank Revolut reported problems affecting several services, including card payments and cash withdrawals from automated teller machines.
The company assured customers that their funds and personal information remained secure.
Lloyds Bank also experienced disruptions affecting digital services, while HSBC acknowledged that some customers had difficulty accessing their accounts.
In its October 20 report, Reuters confirmed that the problems affected multiple financial institutions as Google engineers worked to restore the underlying cloud infrastructure.
Lloyds later said it expected services to return to normal after the underlying technical problems were resolved.
The incident highlighted how a problem at a major cloud provider can affect several financial institutions simultaneously, even when the banks themselves are not experiencing a direct hardware failure.
Public Services and Delivery Platforms Also Affected
User reports indicated disruptions involving NHS England, Royal Mail, property website Rightmove and parcel delivery company DPD.
According to Associated Press, the disruption also affected applications outside Britain that depended on Google’s London-based cloud infrastructure.
The United Kingdom’s courts and tribunal services experienced problems with remote hearings, demonstrating how disruptions to shared digital infrastructure can interfere with public administration.
Royal Mail acknowledged the technical issues but said letter and parcel deliveries were not affected.
Some reported problems with other platforms could not be conclusively linked to Google Cloud. User-submitted outage reports alone do not establish that every affected website depended on the same infrastructure.
Google Identifies Power-Related Failure in London
Google Cloud identified the source of the problem as a power event affecting its europe-west2-b availability zone within the larger London region.
The company’s official status dashboard reported that the disruption affected numerous cloud products, including computing, networking, databases and storage systems.
Among the affected services were Google Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, Cloud Run and several other infrastructure products.
Google said customers experienced elevated error rates, intermittent network failures and temporary service unavailability.
Engineers worked to restore affected systems after addressing the power problem.
Google reported that most affected workloads were recovering by 13:10 British Summer Time.
The incident was formally closed at 15:00 British Summer Time, although Google acknowledged that a very small number of customers might still have required additional assistance.
The company said it would publish a detailed incident analysis after completing its internal investigation.
As of the incident closure, Google had not publicly established the underlying cause of the power event itself.
Outage Raises Concerns About Cloud Computing Dependence
The incident has renewed concerns about the increasing dependence of banks, government agencies and large businesses on a limited number of cloud computing providers.
Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure operate infrastructure supporting thousands of organizations around the world.
Cloud computing allows companies to use shared computing resources rather than maintaining every server and application within their own facilities.
However, failures at major infrastructure providers can potentially interrupt services across multiple unrelated organizations at the same time.
In July 2026, British regulators placed Google Cloud, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and Oracle under direct oversight as critical technology suppliers to the financial industry.
The measures were intended to strengthen supervision of third-party providers whose failures could threaten the availability of essential financial services.
Following Tuesday’s disruption, Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority said it was engaging with Google and affected firms to assess the impact.
European regulators have also identified major cloud providers as critical technology suppliers because of the financial industry’s dependence on their systems.
The incident illustrates why regulators increasingly emphasize operational resilience, contingency planning and the ability to recover from failures affecting external service providers.
What the Google Cloud Outage Means for Businesses
The disruption provides an important lesson for organizations that rely on cloud-based infrastructure to operate websites, applications and payment systems.
Cloud services offer flexibility, scalability and access to sophisticated technology, but they do not eliminate the possibility of service interruptions.
Businesses operating critical digital services can reduce their exposure by maintaining reliable backups, testing recovery procedures and designing applications to withstand the failure of individual infrastructure components.
Using multiple availability zones or regions can provide additional resilience, although such arrangements introduce extra costs and technical complexity.
For banks and payment providers, temporary loss of access can prevent customers from making transactions or managing their accounts.
For public institutions, cloud failures can affect access to services that citizens increasingly expect to be available at all times.
These concerns are also relevant to businesses and digital service providers across Africa, where cloud hosting and online payment systems are becoming increasingly important to commercial activity.
The London outage demonstrates that even advanced cloud infrastructure operated by one of the world’s largest technology companies remains vulnerable to technical disruption.
Google Cloud has restored the affected services and is investigating the incident, while regulators and affected organizations continue assessing its wider consequences.
